Landseer dog breed information & Characteristics

Landseer dog is a graceful yet a powerfully built dog, originally developed by swiss breeders which is oftentimes confused with Newfoundland dog breeds, which also appears similar except for the colour pattern of Black and white.

History of Landseer

This breed got its name after the British Drawing artist Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, as one of his drawing art named A distinguished Member of the Human society features this type of dog breed.

Landseer breed was developed by swiss and german breeding after being being inspired from the paintings of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer which depicted the similar large white and black pictures of this dog.

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer has painted this dog in several paintings of his own. The dog in his paintings represents the rescue dog, Bob.

This is the story of the rescue dog Bob, that the Bob and his owner were ship wrecked in two incidents; while bob managed to save his owner once, he couldn’t save him for the second time. After this incident of his master’s death, Bob become homeless but that didn’t stop him from rescuing drowning people. Because of his good deeds he was provided a shelter by human society in Auckland. Bob served as a rescue dog for several years until his death.

There are many stories and drawings through out the history of this breed about saving several people from drowning

It is widely believed that the newfoundland dog breeds are crossed with Pyrenean dog breeds to develop a black and white dog breed which depicted in the famous painting of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s A distinguished member of Human society.

This dog breeds distinguishes itself from its close relatives with Slender body and very active temperament.

Appearance

Landseers are similar to Newfoundlands in appearance but vary in colour i.e. Black and white. Some call Landseer as just the black and white colour variant of Newfoundland. The International kennel club recognizes them as a separate breed. The male Landseers can grow upto 80 cm in height and weigh upto 80 kg. The female Landseers can grow upto 72 cm and weigh upto 70 kg

They have a thick double coat with the color combination of black and white. They appear tall and strong, their eyes are almond shaped, tails are long and little curly at the edge. Muzzles and strong, the body is white in colour and patches of black. Facial features like nose, ear will always be black.

Temperament

The Landseer is a gentle giant with a kind temperament so they are excellent companion dogs. They usually behave dignified and be affectionate with people it loves. They easily get along with children. This dog is very patient, behaves gentle with kids. They are overall friendly with known but can be aloof with unfamiliar people.

Grooming

The Landseer dog breeds requires moderate grooming regimen. They have a thick double coat and shed extensively. The coat should be brushed regularly to keep neat and healthy. Regular brushing of the coat helps removes hair tangles and help promote natural oils in their body to keep their hair healthy and water resistant.

Breed Intelligence

They are intelligent, can be trained easily. They derive pleasure from learning new things. and they love to do things to get praise and rewards from their masters. Remember Landseer won’t blindly follows commands, They acts on their own mind. They can be openly defiant to commands they don’t like.

Exercise

Landseer requires moderate physical activity. A regular walk is sufficient. This dog is full of energy when it doesn’t find ways to exhaust their excessive energy, They find other ways to release them such as destroying shoes, excessive barking and abnormal behaviours.
